These elevations of Monmouth House show a Dutch mannerist style, with a hipped roof, quoins, and windows framed by shouldered architraves and bracketed sills. The large mansion overlooking Soho Square was built in 1681 for the Duke of Monmouth, but it remained unfinished at the time of his death in 1685, and it was soon replaced by another house attributed to Thomas Archer (demolished 1773). The drawing shows a three-story building on seven bays. The third-floor windows have alternating segmental and triangular pediments flanking a gabled center range. The roof is surmounted by an octagonal cupola and finial. Gallery label for installation of YCBA collection, 2014
